Anxiety Relief Q&A

Sometimes people suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder need anxiolytic medications in addition to antidepressants, psychotherapy or other therapeutic interventions. But Seaside Wellness offers more choice that gets to root cause of the anxiety.

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain. For anxiety, we often focus on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, or left DLPFC. This region plays an important role in emotional regulation, executive function, and top-down control over the limbic system, including areas like the amygdala that are involved in fear and worry responses.

In individuals with anxiety, there can be dysregulation in these circuits. By stimulating the left DLPFC, TMS helps modulate neural activity and improve the brain’s ability to regulate anxious thoughts and physiological stress responses.

Treatment is  done in the office. Sessions last about 24 minutes, depending on the protocol, and are performed twice a week over 3 weeks. You remain awake and seated during the treatment. Most patients describe the sensation as a tapping on the scalp. Potential side effects may include mild scalp discomfort or mild headache, which is rare and usually improves quickly.

TMS is non-systemic, meaning it does not involve medication and does not cause weight gain, sexual side effects, or sedation. It can be used as an alternative for patients who have not responded well to medications, or as an adjunct to ongoing therapy and pharmacologic treatment.

Our goal with left DLPFC stimulation is to improve emotional regulation, decrease excessive worry, and help restore functional balance in the brain networks involved in anxiety.
